I took it as both Frank and seriouscreep mocking the people who were using the racial slurs but apparently that wasn't how other people took it. idk.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-28 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
i took it that way, too.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-28 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That's how I took it as well but I think the safest bet is to say it was innappropriate and ignorant and shouldn't have been said in the first place. That's just the bottom line, get a filter, Frank.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-28 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It could have been taken that way it he hadn't tried to excuse it with, 'Oh, but it wasn't with 'er' at the end, lololol'.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-28 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The use of "friendly" makes me think he was still being sarcastic but you can certainly read it as completely serious/not mocking racism. It's totally fair. Either way I think it was bad and stupid and shouldn't have been said.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-28 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally true, but sarcasm isn't always easy to detect over the internet.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-30 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
Or 'Yes and the people who I was just mocking for being racist aren't racist because they used the -a ending.'

I took it that way too. I did a twitter research. LOTS of black people are using the word 'twigga' to greet their followers or when they say good night to them all. I searched the word in twitter and a lot came up, they all had display pics and they were black people. So most probably, this person who seriouscreep saw using the word was black and she just found the twitter-variation funny -so do I, I find it funny that peopel are adapting lots of words to twitter. SHE said it was genius, not Frank. Frank only retwitted it and said 'haha', which having seen other of his twits with the same reply, most probably doesn't mean he found it exactly HILARIOUS, it's more like mockery. A 'ha ha, how funny'.

I find it wrong to practically call someone racist for something so simple and that you don't know the details of. And the word 'nigga' IS used among black people like 'mate' or 'buddy' That's what I've seen and heard, I'm not saying I know much about the reason why they do so, but there seem to be a different to them between that way of the word and the one ending in 'er'.

If someone had implied I was racist just by retwitting something that called my attention, I'd be mad too.

And no, I don't agree with or like everything the guys do, but so far I've seen fans being a LOT more rude and disrespectful to Frank than the other way round. And that particular twit wasn't soemthing to jump on him for.

My opinion.

difference* and just for retwitting*

And...one thing is to tell him 'you should have thought better before retwitting that, some people could find it offensive and a different one to make a HUGE deal out of it and scream RACIST.

Please...

What he said (or retweeted) was racist, and so should be called out.

Oh what a great way of presenting your point. You should probably shut up too, then.

[identity profile] jubella.livejournal.com 2009-08-28 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Despite all of those implications that you present, what Frank said was racist no matter how much you try to excuse it. So. Stop making excuses.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-28 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Correct. It doesn't matter what was behind it or how it was said, it was still very problematic and racist. It's very important to say this and identify it as such.

They weren't excuses, just a different interpretation,I was just pointing out that you can't directly call someone racist because of this. People make mistakes, just tell them they were wrong.

it doesn't matter how many persons of color on twitter use that word. frank is not a black man, that is why his use of that word was racist. if you are white you should never use any variation of the n-word. end of story. frank and every single white person, regardless of how open-minded they are or how many black friends they have, need to realize this and stop using it immediately no more questions asked.

but so far I've seen fans being a LOT more rude and disrespectful to Frank than the other way round.

Those fans are mostly teenage girls. Do you honestly think that Frank replying to them with misogynistic statements was a reasonable response?

(Anonymous) 2009-08-28 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Frank may have been retweeting, but he obviously found it funny enough to retweet in the first place. And if, as you say, his intent was to mock, I don't see how that's any better. In fact, I would consider it a hell of a lot worse.

It is, in fact, racist for a white person to use nigger, or any variation of the word, to refer to a black person, regardless of whether or not black people are using that word themselves. Many of them are using the word to reclaim it - you cannot reclaim a word that has never been applied to you.

Sometimes the people you like and admire do racist things, it's really important to not make excuses for them but to confront it. This goes for even people you don't necessarily know. I like Frank a lot, but this doesn't mean he's not racist and stupid. He needs to stfu and learn.

I hope after these responses you understand better why it was problematic and accept it and the criticism as applied to him (and whoever else would potentially be tempted to use this.)

You know, I hate when people try to defend twat-like behavior. It was nothing for him to retweet for thousands of people to read. That's IGNORANT.

That was how I read it - but sarcasm is always hard to read in text, especially in a medium like twitter.

Yeah, agreed. I think the real problem here is that some very impulsive people should realise that and think better before posting! Things can be interpreted in many ways on the internet, some are too easy to take the worst.
