it doesn't matter how many persons of color on twitter use that word. frank is not a black man, that is why his use of that word was racist. if you are white you should never use any variation of the n-word. end of story. frank and every single white person, regardless of how open-minded they are or how many black friends they have, need to realize this and stop using it immediately no more questions asked.

Nicely said.

I really agree, I don't use it myself, but I can think why many people wouldn't fully realise why it's wrong when seeing others using it as a normal greeting word. So yeah, I agree with telling them ti's wrong, but not with automatically calling them racist.

Everyone is racist, everyone makes racist statements. They need to be called such in order to be recognized and discussed. This is not a bad thing, the bad thing is saying something racist or problematic.

I still don't agree with using the word 'racist' as easily. People should be 'reprimanded', taught, first.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-28 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
If we don't call it racist, how will we ever learn how to not be racist, recognize racist behavior and fix ourselves? It's important for my friends, family, acquantinces to use that word on me so that I know, hey this isn't okay. You teach and learn by using that word, not by burying it.

I respect your opinion...I just feel different about labeling. I'm not going to discuss this, of course.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-28 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope eventually you'll be more okay with labeling things as they are. I understand the desire to sugar coat but it does no one any good to do so, including people you love and admire.

so, if a person doesn't accept homosexualism, for an example but has nothing against it, should this person be labelled as homophobic?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/rayla_/ 2009-08-30 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
Why would they not accept it if they had nothing against it?

[identity profile] jubella.livejournal.com 2009-08-28 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
If something is racist, it should be called racist. If something is misogynistic, it should be called misogynistic. If something is homophobic, it should be called homophobic. And etc.

The action, the words...yes, not the people. Not in such an automatic way, that's all I mean.

[identity profile] jubella.livejournal.com 2009-08-28 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I understand. Labeling things are tricky because people automatically get on the defensive. But you have to be able to understand that everyone has racism, misogyny, etc. even if it's internalized. It all goes back on understand the reason why things are wrong and why they should be corrected.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-29 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Bullshit. Making a word exclusively for use by black people is in itself racist. It only supports the idea that we're not all equal.
