Interview: MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE is "for f***ing life".
Written by Shahlin Graves | Friday, 24 February 2012 23:24

MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE guitarist FRANK IERO is standing side-of-stage watching Best Coast's set at the Auckland Big Day Out. He applauds at the end of every single song, squinting thoughtfully in appreciation of the band, with frontman GERARD WAY joining him for a few minutes before it's time for the pair to prepare for their own set on the festival's main stage. Likewise, their band-mate RAY TORO has also been taking advantage of the day's sights and sounds, being quick to tweet his appreciation of a fellow band on the tour: "Vaccines on at BDO. Sound great!"
( interview (+4 photos) )
Dear friends, what follows is a few weeks of our lives in digital form. These photos were taken between the days of January 17th 2012 and February 6th 2012, as we toured the great lands of New Zealand and Australia respectively. As brothers we roamed these grand terrains. Friends were made, enemies slain, pie faces devoured with a quickness and fury. We are better men because of these (mis)adventures, but i must warn you... some of these images cannot nor will not be unseen.
enjoi at your own risk.
no worries. xofrnk

Frank Interview - Kill Your Stereo
2011 marks 10 years since My Chemical Romance formed. People first started taking notice when the band released their 2004 major label debut, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge but their 2006 concept album The Black Parade really put them on the map. 2010 saw the band release their fourth studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys, taking their sound in a new direction. Next year My Chemical Romance will be hitting our shores as a part of the Big Day Out as well as playing a string of headlining sideshows. Before the band begin preparing for the tour, guitarist Frank Iero sat down for a chat with Kill Your Stereo to discuss picking set lists, their next album and exploding sinuses.

My Chemical Romance's Frank Iero: the 10 greatest punk albums of all time
"My father and grandfather are both drummers, so music was a big part of my childhood," says My Chemical Romance guitarist Frank Iero. "On the weekends, I used to go to clubs to see my grandfather play Dixieland and standards, and then I'd go somewhere else to watch my dad play the blues. A lot of times these were after-hours places where I shouldn't even be. The owners kind of looked the other way."
According to Iero, these experiences were his introductions to the punk-rock ethos. "It was about doing things the way you want, for sheer love of the music," he says. "The blues was my dad's punk rock – guys writing their own music, recording it in their basement and totally playing from the heart. People looked down at the blues at one point, but it really hit a nerve with him. When I discovered my own punk rock, I'm sure I felt the same way that he did."
While in high school, a friend played Iero a mix tape of of local, New Jersey-based punk bands, which the guitarist recalls as a defining musical moment. "Here were people my age putting on shows, making their own music, doing it DIY-style. It blew my mind! You didn’t need to be a virtuoso to start a band – all you needed was passion. I took that idea and ran with it."
Following family tradition, Iero became a musician. “I fell in love with the entire thing," he says, "Starting a band, putting up flyers, playing shows wherever I could – I loved the whole experience. It might have come from my dad and my grandfather, bit it also came from punk. The music was vital, but so was the mindset.
In Iero's view, punk still lives today. "It doesn’t matter what year you were born or what shows you went to," he says. "You can be a teenager in your bedroom, making music on your laptop. It’s about self-expression, going against the grain. As long as you’re doing it for the right reasons, you’re punk rock.”
On the following pages, Frank Iero lists what he calls the 10 greatest punk records of all time - in chronological order. "To me, that's the only way to do it," he says. "Saying one record is the best, as in THE BEST...I just couldn't go there."

My Chemical Romance sell-out to Glee
My Chemical Romance guitarists Frank Iero and Ray Toro have insisted they were thrilled to let the Glee cast cover their hit single Sing and become the first rock band to feature on the hugely popular TV show in the process.
Glee gave the song their full treatment in an episode this week and immediately afterwards ‘Sing it for the world,’ the chorus line, shot to the top of the most searched terms on Google.
And Toro reckons having their music featured on the smash hit show is another way for the New Jersey rockers to have their music heard.

My Chemical Romance interview: “We just have no reason to be sad anymore”
Mere hours before they take to the stage in Dublin’s O2, bassist Mikey Way and guitarist Frank Iero of New Jersey punk-pop icons My Chemical Romance chatted to State about the inspiration behind their fourth studio album, Danger Days: the True Lives of The Fabulous Killjoys. Though the gig itself was far from sold out, there were reports of cues stretching around the corner the night before in anticipation…

MCR Chat to I Like Music
A bird's eye view of Wembley Arena taken late afternoon on Saturday 12th February would show a unified swarm of black flooding the venue's parameter. Fans of My Chemical Romance have long been hailed a passionate bunch - in 2008 the Daily Mail labelled them a suicide cult sparking an MCRmy protest outside their office gates, while last year NME writer Luke Lewis recieved a wealth of online hatred following his non-music centred (what a surprise) comments about the band.
Letting slip to a bunch of 'meet-and-greet' winners that we're here to interview their heroes prompts a hasty response, "what will you ask them?" - the very same question asked by their label before our interview time was confirmed. Four albums, sell-out tours and a music career in its tenth, successful year, MCR now sit at the centre of a huge operation. "We're here to chat to them about music. Their guitars. Their record collections."
A backstage maze leads to Mikey and Frank. Sat in a neat dressing room looking incredibly calm, we settle in to a chat about music - Mikey's new custom Epiphone, moments of clarity on stage, pretending to be Bruce Dickinson and their genuine appreciation for the most dedicated MCR followers...

Q&A: Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance
Recording its fourth album was a frustrating yet liberating venture for My Chemical Romance. Riding high on the critical and commercial success of its 2006 concept record, "The Black Parade," the New Jersey-bred band prepared to make its next statement with producer Brendan O'Brien. But, according to rhythm guitarist Frank Iero, those sessions just didn't feel right.
"We kind of defined what we thought it was going to be before we made it," Iero told SoundSpike. "That record was a little bit more straightforward. We were wearing our influences on our sleeve. It didn't feel like we had meshed those influences in with what we do well."
So the band -- which also includes vocalist Gerard Way, bassist Mikey Way and guitarist Ray Toro -- jettisoned those sessions and gave it a go with "The Black Parade" knob turner, new Warner Bros. Records Chairman Rob Cavallo. Those songs would amount to My Chemical Romance's latest concept opus, "Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys."
"Looking back, when we went back and re-imagined this record, those influences found their way in," Iero said. "It's our take on those influences, rather than, 'I want a song that feels this way,' and making that song."
The first official single from "Danger Days," "Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)," was released to digital retailers Sept. 28. The album was released two months later, on Nov. 22, and claimed the No.1 spot on Soundscan's Rock and Alternative Album charts. It also debuted at No. 3 on the Digital Albums chart and No. 7 on the Internet Albums chart. In addition, "Danger Days" landed at No. 8 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart, selling 112,460 units in its first week of release. That compares to "The Black Parade's" bow at 240,000 copies.
Iero spoke to SoundSpike about My Chemical Romance's current radio station-sponsored concert tour, its official jaunt that begins next year, the making of "Danger Days" and Mikey Way's love of professional wrestling.
