I was actually talking about the annoying simpleton reply, but if you want...
Racism is just another form of hate, if it wasn't for that, people would hate each other for something else. Hell, just a few days ago, he was dissing a girl for having long hair. *shrug* I will not be crying myself to sleep over his use of one word or another.

Uhm.

With less of an attitude, but yes. (http://community.livejournal.com/tothetune/14842.html?thread=57082#t57082)

Look. What he said or retweeted or whatever was not cool on any level, it doesn't matter what you think about people hating people. It was ignorant and it needs to be called out. It doesn't matter how much you love the person, and I do love Frank, it's not okay to stand for their fuckups.

[identity profile] maskitheclown.livejournal.com 2009-08-28 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I don't particularly love Frank, I think he can be a total dick, the thing with the girl a few days ago made me wanna slap him, seriously.
I don't wanna be all "omg this is what happened to me" but I think I should explain. I live in a country drenched in post-war hate and hate-language is something I hear on daily basis. I don't use those words, but I pick my battles now. I'm still trying to explain to people -close- to me that saying "fa**ots are sick but that's ok, we shouldn't kill them or anything" actually ISN'T a positive statement. I apologize that my attitude offends you all, it's a hard earned defense mechanism.

On the other hand, if you all can get him to think twice about why saying that is wrong, that's awesome, really.

Thank you for explaining. I'm coming from a place of privilege and I should recognize that. I'm not sure Twitter is the place to get into a discussion with Frank about why what he said was problematic because there's a lot of varying factors and nuances and 140 characters is not a lot of space but I'm happy someone tried to do so. Hopefully after getting defensive and reactionary he took a step back and thought about it.

Anyway, thank you again for your response.

I'm glad you actually said something and not just grunted. :) I will try to come off as less of an ice queen in the future.

I'm not sure either because, the word itself aside, if he's not yet aware that he has buckets of fans, some of which will eventually try to imitate him in every stupid thing he does, I'm thinking he might need pie charts and pictures.

I don't think Frank is the most thoughtful or rational person, especially online. I also think he's very ignorant and needs to be open to more education, especially educating himself and seeking out the information and wider points of view.

[identity profile] maskitheclown.livejournal.com 2009-08-28 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're right, which still surprises me because until recently I was under the impression that his childhood made him more sensitive to people around him. Obv I'm new to mcr. I hope someone he respects will have the will to sit down with him and explain why he shouldn't WANT to use words like that, because I don't think he'll come to the idea to research anything all on his own.

Also, I'm pretty sure that's your reply down the thread, and - thank you.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-28 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I think his experiences growing up led him to be sensitive to some things, like poverty and homophobia, for example, situations like that. I absolutely hope the same thing and it's entirely possible it could or has happened. Or maybe a fan will be able to speak to him face to face about it in the future, I think he responds much better that way.

Yes, it is. You're very welcome.

That makes a lot more sense than seemingly trivializing hate speech & equating racist epithets with picking on a girl's hair. I still disagree with your original sentiment (even without actually getting shouty directly at him I still am really unable to laugh it off like that), but I can see where that's coming from and why you'd react that way.

[identity profile] maskitheclown.livejournal.com 2009-08-28 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad it makes a bit more sense. My attitude, it sucks, I know. *cringe*

(Anonymous) 2009-08-28 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't need to make excuses for an attitude that is created to deal with the real world. How we get by is how we get by, how you're able to educate your friends and family is how you have to do it.
