TBP makes Top 10 Favorite Albums of the Decade

Pop Damage lists The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance on it's Top 10 Favorite Albums of the Decade, in no particular order:
Many bands find they need to change in order to forward their music. But in the case of My Chemical Romance, they felt the need to become an entirely different band for this release. Not only does the album tell the story of a dying cancer patient viewing his life in reverse as he meets death in the form of a marching band, but the publicity and hype surrounding it depicted MCR as The Black Parade itself. The album opens with the sound of a flatline and ends with the repeated mantra, “I am not afraid to keep on living/I am not afraid to walk this world alone.” In releasing an album about death, My Chemical Romance celebrated what it is to be alive.

When they put it like that, I don't hate TBP quite so much.

Why do you hate it?

It's not so much the music as it is the concept and the time period. It just all felt really strange and out of place to me.

I just love how epic the album is. They took it chance and it was awesome.

TBP gets marked as 'emo music omg'so much and just distracts people from the album itself. I love TBP, theres so much meaning in it. Theres tons of theatrical influence, amazing melody, and dark humor that just brings it together. I'm so glad it was recognized here.

you said it, gurl.

....Call me slow, but I never realised that the album was about the patient viewing his life in reverse. Is this just this site's interpretation, or is that the actual canon explanation?

It all makes sense now, oh my gosh.

Yeah I was on the same train as you for a year or so. So for a long time I thought it was the story of what happened *after* the patient meets TBP, but that just didn't make sense. I was pretty much resigned to never getting the ~~concept of the album and just liking it anyway.

I've never seen it mentioned that the story is told in reverse though. I think it's just something we were supposed to pick up on. /0\

"So for a long time I thought it was the story of what happened *after* the patient meets TBP, but that just didn't make sense. I was pretty much resigned to never getting the ~~concept of the album and just liking it anyway."

My thoughts EXACTLY. My vague attempt at explaining it went along of the lines of the patient being on the verge of death, but then getting the opportunity to return to life with all the hope of Famous Last Words. But that explanation never fully fitted. Then I just decided to ~roll with it. *g*

I don't actually think this is the One True Explanation, because Gerard never really mentioned it through all the promo, and Gerard talks a lot. *shrugs* Open to interpretation is the way I like it. :)

"In releasing an album about death, My Chemical Romance celebrated what it is to be alive."

Finally someone who gets it.

As much as it wasn't my favorite album (it's a great album musically speaking and I admired their guts to dare do that, but it just felt like too much and too different to me) I'm glad someone at last understood its meaning. After reading what Gerard has been saying about how misinterpreted the album was, he might be happy to read this! :P

I never thought of it as the story told in reverse though, but it could be...
