I am so glad that Gerard addressed the "ladyboy" issue.

Oh my God me too. I have a bursting shooting star of love for this song and the trailer and the band. But that rly frustrated me. They've clearly been an anti-homophobic band, and they are seeking to push boundaries of gender. Even the little girl, who could have easily been a boy except we knew they'd cast a girl--I just love that crossing boundaries thing--but the term ladyboy just can't fly. I tried and tried to think of a way it'd be okay and mebe mebe mebe if the character called herself that? To reclaim the insult as something else??? Kind of like a gay character referring to himself as The Fag or something... then MAYBE. But that's not how it was presented. So THANK YOU GERARD. Proving yourself to be a class act.

Is it bad that I don't believe Gerard?

I mean, Dr. Death Defying called the character "Ladyboy" on his twitter and made reference once before (a long time ago) to "packing up the lady" (even before the trailer came out). It seems to me that they've always intended to call him Ladyboy. I think maybe Gerard was just doing a little damage control with that tweet. I hate to think like that, but I don't understand why they would let it get so far if it was a mistake.

[identity profile] anna-unfolding.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it bad that if you are right, I would still forgive them if they upped the damage control STAT and went much louder as on the record about transgender labels? I haven't rly followed all the twitter stuff. So I didn't know when or where she was called ladyboy. You could be right, and maybe for those of us who care, G will have to be more vocal than one little tweet comment, or our love for him will always have an asterisk next to it. No, people don't have to be perfect, but with gender and labels I do expect the highest vigilance from them. Their anti-homophobic message was why I moved from liking fic about the band to liking the band.

Yes, I do think they need to do more than make an apologetic tweet. They need to make a statement of some sort and maybe even ask fans to stop using the name.

I realize some people won't see what the big deal is, but my best friend for the past 6 years has gone nearly his entire life being called "girlie boy" among other things. I don't think people can truly understand how hurtful names like that can be unless they've experienced it first hand.

[identity profile] anna-unfolding.livejournal.com 2010-09-26 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's totally a big deal. I'd love to see a statement, too.

Ladyboy isn't ONLY an offensive term. In fact, It was news to me to find out it WAS offensive. I think of it in the Thai way. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladyboy

It's not unreasonable to assume the My Chem dudes were thinking the same way -- what with them not being known for sluring ANYBODY much less along gender or sexuality lines.

And when someone DID say they were offended My Chem apologized and changed it -- which was gracious and appropriate.

[identity profile] anna-unfolding.livejournal.com 2010-09-26 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think you could be right; perhaps they thought it was playful and not tied to hate the way it is outside of Thailand. I think it's a big deal that we don't use derogatory labels when we know better. If we don't know better, then we can rectify the situation when pointed out. Have they done anything beside Gerard's two tweets? An apology or something? Just checking in case I missed it; the tweets don't rly look like an apology. I'm totally glad he replied as he did (as opposed to not caring or responding at all).

But regardless of who came up with the term: the band, the casting call, the fans--I think it'd be great to get the term out of the dialogue asap and my opinion is that that would take more leadership than two tweets. But I do appreciate him addressing it at all. Hopefully we can all start saying Show Pony with or without Gerard saying anything else on the matter. That, I guess, is the most important thing. That the term doesn't keep getting used in conjunction with a transgender or seemingly trans character.

I don't know. I just can't seem to get past the fact that Dr. Death Defying used it in his tweets. I would think those are scripted.

Gerard's explanation doesn't fly for me. There needs to be some active attempt on the band's or management's part to change the character's name.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-26 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Not slurring ANYONE, seriously? Where the fuck have you been for the last three years? They've become the most hateful, misogynistic and offensive band this side of their buddies MSI. Have you not even seen their tweets? Did you miss Gerard telling the girls in his crown to fuck themselves ("Ladies, I want you all to ACTUALLY FUCK YOURSELVES", and come for him, and "make it convincing"??

Please. I gave up on this hate-spewing band years ago. They're ignorant.

Then what on earth are you DOING here, Trolly Trollerson?

that's how i thought of it too. i think people are just too fucking PC and have to find things to be offended by

From the very same Wiki article that you posted:

Using the notion of Karma, some Thai believe that being a kathoey is the result of transgressions in past lives, concluding that kathoey deserve pity rather than blame.[8]

Kathoey women currently face many social and legal impediments. Families (and especially fathers) are typically disappointed if a son becomes a kathoey, and kathoey women often have to face the prospect of coming out. However, kathoey generally have greater acceptance in Thailand than most other Asian countries.[10] Legal recognition of kathoeys is non-existent in Thailand: even after genital reassignment surgery, they are not allowed to change their legal sex. Discrimination in employment remains rampant.[11] Issues can also arise in regards to access to amenities and gender allocation; for example, a kathoey who had undergone sexual reassignment surgery would still have to stay in an all-male prison.

So now what was it you were saying again about "ladyboys" being accepted in Thailand?

[identity profile] trudybooth.livejournal.com 2010-09-28 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say it was a perfect paradise...

Want to quote the good things in the article too now? Like how they're working to get a third gender on passports and how they've gotten official recognition in various capacities?

I'm saying they're a visible, ancient, and even (though not universally) esteemed part of Thai culture.

Most relevant to THIS discussion, however, LadyBoy is now they self-identify and its not a slur to them.

[identity profile] clandestine-fey.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
No, It's not.

I mean, personally I've seen letters on his knuckles so I believe it was meant to be called SHOW PONY, also it's possible that just around the team they started calling him LadyBoy based on the casting so Dr.DDF could've just been sating a familiar name.

Plus the character himself could just be derrogatary in nature, so you know.
