Umbrella Academy Headed to the Big Screen

According to Variety, Universal Studios has begun work on the big screen adaptation of Umbrella Academy. The comic, created by Gerard Way (front man of My Chemical Romance), revolves around seven superheroes that reunite when their adoptive father dies. They then carry out his plans to save the world.

Universal has hired Mark Bomback (Race to Witch Mountain and Live Free and Die Hard) to write the script. No director has been selected yet.

I first went :\ at Bomback, but then I realized he had Bruce Willis take out a helicopter with a car.

SOLD!

Not gonna lie, im still kind of less than thrilled/really skeptical about this. Its just cause i love the comics so much own their own that i don't want something i love being poked around with...and so soon!

I really hope its going to be awesome and that i'll love it too. I always feel like im raining on the parade when news of this pops up, i can't help it though.

I'm skeptical too, but I'm also very excited, in a good way. 'Cause hey, if the movie sucks, it's still not going to change the fact that the comic is awesome.

[identity profile] kidsxheroes.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That is true and something i keep trying to tell myself. Just why must the things i love get all pawed over and poked at?
Im hoping it will be awesome when it finally sees the light of day though.

I know, right? But at least this is the kind of thing you can easily avoid dealing with, in case it turns out to be shit. I hope it turns out awesome, though, as well.

undecided. ALMOST DARING TO BE EXCITED. DIE HARD.

I was not psyched about Bomback, but now I am forever.

Not to be like Debbie Downer or whatever but haven't we been hearing this same news since the beginning of the year? Call me when they get a director and get through pre production.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I'm sorry movies aren't instantaneous enough for you, Debbie, but this is part of pre-production - deciding who's going to do what. We're going to keep getting news trickling out like this, because that's the way it works. First crew, then cast, then maybe news of filming. It's most likely going to be years before anything even shows up in the theaters, so we just have to deal with the tidbits we get as we get them. At least the continued news is a sign that it hasn't been dropped or forgotten.

Woah. Okay? All I was saying is that I keep hearing the same thing over and over again, which is they found a screenwriter, no director and nothing else. I just don't see the point in having article after article point this out. The "tidbits" are the same thing over and over, that's all.

Calm down, crankypants.

At least the continued news is a sign that it hasn't been dropped or forgotten.

But this isn't continued news. The first time this very same news story was announced was way back in April. This is only one of many articles you can find from back then if you search. (http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/story/live-free-die-hard-writer-joins-ways-umbrella-academy_1100234)

Besides, they even went so far as to cast Preacher years back and that still hasn't materialized. :(

Not sure how I feel about this, on one hand yay! for Gerard on another hand I keep thinking it's too complex to be adapted properly.

This is going to be one confusing as hell movie if this is all carried through. I had to read the comics quite a few times to catch everything (and I'm sure I still don't understand everything)

i'm torn... this is a really complex comic and i'm not sure it can be well adapted...

BUT if it can...

WHOA DUDE FTW!!!!

*plus Bomback is a bonus*

Do you guys think this is going to be a big time movie like Watchmen was, or more low key?

[identity profile] anightmare.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
Watchmen was around for twenty years before they made it into a movie so it's hard to kind of judge lawlz.
