Review: My Chemical Romance disappoints at Fox

My Chemical Romance seemed poised to become the next Green Day in 2006 after the release of its third studio album, "The Black Parade."

That it has ended up being just another Good Charlotte is a major disappointment.

On Thursday, the New Jersey group, led by vocalist Gerard Way, did next to nothing to differentiate itself from the pack of bland emo-pop-punk acts out there during a sold-out show at the Fox Theater in Oakland.

The 90-minute concert was never spectacular, rarely bad, but lacking the thing that this group had in spades in 2006-'07: excitement.

During its "Black Parade" tour, My Chemical Romance came across like a band on the brink of becoming something special -- a blend of Broadway and alt-rock -- and had fashioned a sometimes-mesmerizing emo-rock opera that was a close cousin to Green Day's "American Idiot."

My Chemical Romance was hoping to catch more lightening in a bottle with the long-awaited follow-up, "Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys," another concept album that came out late last year. Yet it was nearly devoid of all the Ziggy-Stardust-meets-Queen flourishes and the weird Broadway touches that made "Black Parade" so interesting, and is instead work that is even more arduous to listen to than it is to describe.

My Chemical Romance's fans might not agree with that conclusion, but it's a safe bet that most would sign off on the statement that "Killjoys" isn't a worthy follow-up to "Black Parade." That hypothesis comes directly from witnessing the crowd at the Fox.

It was startling to see the difference in fans' excitement levels as the group volleyed between the two albums for much of the set. They'd listen politely to a frivolous synth-pop ditty from the new album like "Planetary (GO!)" and then go absolutely bonkers when the group would march into a "Parade" offering such as "Mama." That scene would repeat throughout the night.

Most of the blame for the uneven showing has to go on the vocalist's shoulders. Although Way looked striking, with his bright-red-dyed hair and white suit coat over a black shirt, he exhibited little stage presence or charisma. It takes conviction to sing songs about a fictional evil corporation from the future to thousands of Hot Topic shoppers and other suburban mall rats -- but Way often sounded like he was reading off a teleprompter when he spoke to the crowd.

"Oakland, they are going to try to clean you up. ... They are going to try to fix your face ... what are you going to do about it?

"You are going to sing about it."

That will fix that evil corporation, for sure!

Fortunately, there was enough "Black Parade" material in the second half of the set to send the crowd home happy. But the band left the stage with a burning question: Where does My Chemical Romance go from here? On the bright side, basically anyplace is better than where the band is right now.

Sad to read an article like this, but I don't completely disagree. Gerard's live fire is not like it used to be. :-(

He's sort of on/off - still great sometimes - but I wish to God I'd had to money to see them on the Black Parade tour, pgisgnejkwbgkjeg.

The issue with articles like this is more the overwhelming snide overtone than any sort of actual bad review of their performance?

I mean, they have off days... but some stuff, like the "they're gonna clean you up speech" clearly just passed over this dude's head.

Somewhere James Montgomery is full of rage and he doesn't know why.

What show was this person at? O.o

[identity profile] stealenoughtime.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
lol. I've been to quite a few concerts I personally found amazing and the newspaper review trashed it, so this was my exact reaction to all of them :D

[identity profile] jslvr4vr.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
What the hell? I haven't even been to a show yet but you all that have say they are so good? What in the world?

Seriously, pay no mind to this guy. I saw them at the show following this one and they were electric, the whole venue bursting at the seams with energy. "Planetary" had the whole place jumping, as did most of the rest of the stuff they played. I don't know how he was in Oakland, but at our show, Gerard was intensely into it! So, when you go, just go AND HAVE A GREAT TIME.

I haven't got the money to actually go to different states cuz the ones I can go to are sold out.

I haven't, I just think it's stupid that he wants the show to be like the old times. I think if a person goes it's for the music and maybe to see the band live not for the stage show, etc.

"They'd listen politely to a frivolous synth-pop ditty from the new album like "Planetary (GO!)""

Well. I haven't been to this concert but I've been to two gigs of this tour and the crowd THERE went "absolutely bonkers" for songs from Danger Days (ESPECIALLY for Planetary!) and for the older songs too.

Meh. I am willing to admit that even the best bands can occasionally play bad concerts but I think it's just as likely that the journo had a bad day.

All bands can have bad days, but the arguments this guy gives kinda make no sense...:P

[identity profile] stealenoughtime.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
haha, yes ^^

... lol, his attempt at snark is almost cute
That will fix that evil corporation, for sure!
whatever you say.....

That part was basically him having no idea about some things fans know, in this case the meaning of Gerard's speech before SING. :P Which yeah...it's even kind of cute, how clueless he is.

[identity profile] rosalui.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
If "listen politely" means "jump and scream and claw frantically and kick Rosa in the face as they crowd surf," then yes, that is the general reaction.

[identity profile] trudybooth.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! I just totally tried to "like" this.

[identity profile] lorij.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone lost their shit during Planetary at all three shows I saw. That is not a song you can just hang out and not move to.

[identity profile] lovewhisper.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I saw no one just "listening politely" to Planetary.

[identity profile] kashiichan.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's impossible to "listen politely" to Planetary. IMPOSSIBLE.

[identity profile] stealenoughtime.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been to one of their pre-album release shows and I didn't even know Planetary before (as most of the audience, I think) AND EVERYBODY WENT NUTS WITHIN 15 SECONDS

That's about the biggest compliment you can get as a band, I think!

"They'd listen politely to a frivolous synth-pop ditty from the new album like "Planetary (GO!)"

Idk what in the hell shows they've been watching but their argument is beyond invalid. Im thinking this song is getting the same reception as it did at shows in the UK/Europe...which is people going batshit and busting some moves \o/

Y'know. Just saying. I love Danger Days. I think it's a great follow up to Black Parade, because to me, in my opinion, Black Parade got old and overplayed very, very fast. It's a good album, don't get me wrong, but Danger Days is better, I feel. It just has more energy and... difference in songs, I guess.

[identity profile] mjb12.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree! I feel like Danger Days could have been marketed better which would have made it more successful.

[identity profile] lstinhpfdm.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I was at this show and I'm not sure what this guy was talking about, or that he was at the same show I was. I didn't see a big difference in how the audience reacted between the songs from the different albums. The audience was sure hoping during Planetary (GO!).

Well how is he gonna jump around like he did 5 years ago? He's 34...

[identity profile] rosalui.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not like he's got arthritis yet, lol.

[identity profile] x-monroeville-x.livejournal.com 2011-04-08 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, I know, but I just think it's unfair of the reviewer to say any of them aren't as energetic as they were 5/6 years ago. They've had kids and settled down since. I think it's silly of them to expect the same levels of energy on stage from 30+ men now.

[identity profile] trudybooth.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking this thinking "Maybe Gerard was sort of menstrual" and "Well, maybe the reviewer was sorta menstrual"

Then I got to the crack about a polite Planetary audience and realized the guy must just be out of his mind. I had friends who declared they HATED this album (they've since recovered) and even they couldn't stop listening to Planetary(Go!)

Just, you know, DUH.
