My Chemical Romance – O2 Dublin

My Chemical Romance brought their ‘World Contamination’ tour to Dublin’s O2 last night.

Opening the show was LostAlone, who were nominated for a Kerrang! Award for Best British Newcomer following the release of their debut album Say No To The World. The band gave a great performance. It is easy to see why Gerard Way, Hayley Williams, and Bruce Dickinson have declared support for the band by mentioning them frequently in interviews around the world. Expect to hear alot more about this band in the future.

Next up were hardcore rockers The Blackout. Every time I see them live they never fail to get me hyped up and on a buzz. Their show is energetic and the eager Irish crowd ate up everything that band had to throw at them. The set included ‘ShutTheFuckUppercut’, ‘Spread Legs, Not Lies’ and the brilliant ‘Children Of The Night’. They are booked to play dates around Ireland this April – Go to see these guys if you get the chance – you won’t regret it! Check out the interview we did we them at Download 2010 here

Next up was MCR – with a quick turn around of stage set up, the band were on stage promptly at 9.30pm. Kicking off with ‘Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)’ to an almighty cheer from the crowd.

Flowing through the set list that included ‘Sing’, ‘I’m Not Okay’, ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’, ‘Teenagers’ and my own personal favourite track of the night ‘Destroya’ the band looked like they are enjoying themselves on stage. The band are so tight and Way’s vocals are as strong and impressive as always. They kept the energy up throughout the entire show to the joys of the screaming fans.

The theatrical element to the set was fun and created a great atmosphere around the show, but it was less theatrical than previous tours. Way had made previous comments in an interview with Idiomag that this album and tour was ” not going to be hiding behind a veil of fiction or uniforms and makeup anymore.”

The progression and direction that the band have taken from the massive album ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’, is to some surprising but I find it refreshing. The band have been vocal on wanting to capture a sound of more energy and a garage feel and this is exactly what they have done. As Rock Sound put it – “the way they’ve used everything they learned on ‘The Black Parade’ and tightened up in certain places feels natural and confident” and that it sees “the creativity of the band taking flight musically, graphically and literally.”

This was the bands first show in Dublin since 2007 and they seem to have gathered a whole new army of fans since – which is great to see. With a hint from Way that they will be making some festival appearances this summer – it looks like MCR are back with a bang.
