How 'My Chemical Romance' found a Pontiac Trans Am
A New Jersey rock band that's becoming a fairly big deal, My Chemical Romance, decided it needed a special star for its new video. Not a human, but a car. So the band cast a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am for the part in their video for the single Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na).
It turns out that the band's frontman, Gerard Way, is "a Trans Am obsessive," the band's promoters say.
"Trans Ams are special to me because I was fascinated with them as a boy," says Way. "The Trans Am is a muscle car that has always symbolized freedom to me, and I was definitely a little bit metal-head."
In March, 2009, Way posted a message on the band's website saying that he needed a 1979 Trans Am for "research and exploration," explaining that "it doesn't need to have been kept in an airtight garage for 30 years, but I would prefer something that's not a piece of..." well, you know.
They found the car on EBay and it was restored by "car hunter" Dennis McCarthy, known for his work on The Fast and the Furious and Deathrace. The paint job was done by Marc Dupre at Jack's Auto Body and the engine work was done by Damian Smith, both of Los Angeles.
