My Chemical Romance Talk About Album Four

My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has told Rock Sound that fans should get excited as the group put the finishing touches on their fourth album, currently being mixed with Rich Costey in Los Angeles:

"It is pretty safe to say that fans will not only enjoy this new record more than any of our previous albums but I think they will also get a clear picture from it, one that they will like. It is more raw and honest and a better snapshot of the band."

The singer went on to hint that the album could be My Chemical Romance's defining work:

"A friend who heard the record recently said he now had no interest in listening to our older work anymore, that we had made all our old material redundant. I took it as a compliment, the next thing you do should always make the last thing seem unimportant and I think that will happen when we finally release this album."

Excited? Scared? Want to read more from Gerard? Stay tuned to the site and make sure you pick up the next issue of Rock Sound magazine!

I disagree, but meh, I hope the record is good.

I think you should always strive to get better and evolve but I don't think that means everything
you did before should then be tossed out, it's just different.

Really excited for how excited they sound about it and the stuff we've heard about it so far. It sounds amazing.

Tbh the more I think about it, Gerard is always coming out with these ~statements about their music when he does press, so people should probably take it with a pinch of salt.

[identity profile] spuzz.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, definitely. I was just more responding to that belief generally.

[identity profile] jezrana.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was about to say--I think he always treats whatever they're doing now as the best and most important thing they've ever done, to the point of dissing their former stuff. So I'm a little "shut up TBP will always be important >:(", but I'm mostly "Oh, Gerard".

Haha, I find the best way to take anything Gerard says is with a firm 'LOL Gerard'.

but I'm mostly "Oh, Gerard".

....you make my heart burn?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

i'm dying to hear it, but trust me, Gee-face, NOTHING could make MCR's older stuff irrelevant. EVER!

[identity profile] lovelypoet.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
eh, I think that's the kind of statement that always rings true for the artist but hurts the fan's brain. And definitely not just something that shows up in music. The whole "This is my masterpiece, and everything that came before is shit" syndrome is annoying but sadly predictable.

[identity profile] spuzz.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Y and that kind of hyperbole from Gerard is nothing new, he does it all the time. But I still don't really get it, I mean why would you want your past works to be irrelevant? They're all part of a larger piece and your history. And I say this as an artist who still has her shitty sketchbooks from when I was a crap artist.

LOL tangent /o\

LOL most defensive TBP!wife.

I call it Garry Way syndrome.

Well, yes.

[identity profile] lovelypoet.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
honestly, I don't think it's so much a genuine belief that the old stuff is irrelevant, but more of a blatant attempt to try and counteract the "why can't they just make another album/movie/book like _______" that comes from the audience so much. If you don't argue for your own progress, people will just stick with the old-school/greatest hits.

And it always becomes so hyperbolic from musicians especially, I think, because they really tend to run the risk of getting that one album or one moment that becomes their identifiable identity in the mainstream. A lot more so than film directors or authors, at least.

(i love tangents! \o/)

lol i dont even know how i feel about this.

Haha, ditto.
ext_70011: (what?)

I don't agree with Gerard's way of thinking but as other people has said, it's not normal for him to say these kind of things so...JUST BRING THE ALBUM!

[identity profile] mourning-night.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
:D That actually makes a lot of sense.

Don't hate. Appreciate.

lol, Gerard. ♥

I love when artists go "THIS IS THE BEST THING EVAR!" about their new stuff. It reminds me not to start expecting too much. Hyperboles turn me off. XD

(I still expect to adore the new album anyway.)

I know when I look or listen at my old stuff sometimes all I can see is the mistakes (or things I'd do better/different now).
