From Comic-Con Part 8 – Dark Horse and Gerard Way

From Comic-Con Part 8 – Dark Horse and Gerard Way
By Bill Jones

Dark Horse set out to mix things up at its panel this year. Instead of sitting at the table, running through stories and taking questions from fans, Dark Horse founder Michael Richardson stood throughout the meeting and ushered in a slew of guests to help with a long line of announcements from the company.

The first of those announcements was a new logo for Dark Horse’s 25 anniversary, which the publisher is approaching next year. The publisher also announced a partnership with Challenge Online Games to incorporate Dark Horse characters into baseballboss.com, a free-to-play online virtual baseball card game. Nineteen of Dark Horse’s published characters now appear on cards. Players can take on the Dark Horse team to earn cards.

Umbrella Academy writer Gerard Way then hit the stage along with editor Scott Allie to talk about the next arc of Umbrella Academy, dubbed “Hotel Oblivion.” Way said the Umbrella Academy will have a new logo once again, and fans can expect to see the least amount of the Academy ever, as he is planning to explore more of the villains this time around in a setting compared to Arkham Asylum.

“I’m more excited about ‘Hotel Oblivion’ than any other series so far,” Way said.

In addition, Way announced a new Dark Horse series he will be penning titled The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. Becky Cloonan will be handling the art duties. Way said readers can expect something different than Umbrella Academy, and that it will deal with a number of different issues, but boils down to a guy who just wants his Ramones records back. Killjoys is set for 2010.

“I want to say it’s semi-autobiographical, but nothing in it really happened to me,” Way joked during his own panel.

During his panel, Way also touched upon the film talk surrounding Umbrella Academy. Way said Gary Oldman would make a great Hargreeves, but declined to comment on the rest of the cast, for fear that the actors cast would end up entirely different and he would be alienated on set.

Back at the Dark Horse panel, Richardson said the publisher is looking at different ways to reach its existing audience and newcomers with plans to hit the mystery market with an Alexandra Barnaby graphic novel from novelist Janet Evanovich. In another market crossover, this time with the video game world, Bioware lead writer Mac Walters is penning Mass Effect: Redeption for Dark Horse, scheduled for 2010. Richardson called Mass Effect Dark Horse’s next big license, akin to the Star Wars books started in 1991.

Eric Powell, creator of The Goon, is set to work on the Metalocalypse crossover. Powell noted that he will be working with the creator and director of the show on the project.

“I’ve wanted for a long time to do a crossover that deconstructs a crossover,” Powell said.

Other announcements designed to please nerdom start with plans for Joss Whedon to have a hand in The Cabin in the Woods book, which is set to be released after the movie. A Dr. Horrible one-shot is scheduled for the fall. And Dark Horse is working with Felicia Day on The Guild comics. Season 3 of The Guild is set to debut August 25.

In other film news, Richardson noted Dark Horse Entertainment’s deal with Universal Pictures, and said there are plans for Corpse Delivery Service, MPD Psycho and possibly Criminal Macabre movies.
