My Chemical Romance are The Fabulous Killjoys

Emo whingebags no longer, My Chemical Romance have punched their way beyond a short-lived rock subgenre by reinventing themselves at every turn, this time as comic book superheroes The Fabulous Killjoys.

There was little of the theatre of their recent videos here, however. With singer Gerard Way endlessly running his fingers through his newly red hair, that was it for spectacle as the band played it simple - fast and very loud.

New songs Vampire Money and Party Poison were gloriously dumb, frantic bursts of punk energy with fist-in-the-air choruses. The current single, Sing, went all out for uplift, sounding like it had been written in anticipation of work on a future charity telethon.

They softened up with synthpop too, employing fizzing electronics on the euphoric choruses of Planetary (GO!) and The Only Hope for Me is You. It was a more focused approach than the deliberate eccentricity of some songs from their previous album, The Black Parade, though the cabaret stylings of Mama and the jokey chorus of Teenagers offered much-needed gear changes in this setlist.

Older material was more tortured, less tuneful, while their breakthrough hit, I'm Not Okay (I Promise), demonstrated their long-term skill for memorable lines.

Way worked his showman's magic, insisting that the UK is his favourite place to play, trying on a fan's Union Jack jacket and hinting tantalisingly at a major summer festival return. To judge from the reaction here, his public will be overjoyed to see him again, whatever he's calling his band by August.
